Last Friday, the 10th of October, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of our beloved Master’s program Computational Engineering.

With about a hundred guests, ranging from course coordinators, university and faculty members, over current and previous lecturers, to alumni and current students, we went on a tour through CompEng’s history. After a short introduction by the Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Prof. Balzani (Chair of Continuum Mechanics) and CompEng Course Director Prof. Waimann (Chair of Mechanics of Materials), we heard a speech by Prof. Niemann , former Dean of the Faculty from 1997 to 2001 and former head of the Working Group of Building Aerodynamics, about the beginnings of CompEng, followed by Mr. Sahlmen’s (General Coordinator) speech on “Code, Compute, Create – 25 Years of Computational Engineering” and former course Director, Prof. Hackl’s speech on 25 Years of CompEng and it’s partner university, the VGU. We are thankful for all speakers for creating a vivid picture of CompEng throughout the years. We also want to thank Prof. Schmid (head of Working Group Theory of Structures and Simulation Technology), founder and inventor of the program in 2000, who unfortunately was not able to join the event.

Not only did we hear about CompEng’s history though, we also heard from some of our program’s alumni students – the people that the entire program has been created for! Prof. Dr.-Ing Abdullah Alsahly (gradudate 2010), M.Sc. Tariq Fadl Al-Wesabi (graduate 2020) and M.Sc. Lisa von Rössing (graduate 2024) have shared some of their personal experiences in the program, all agreeing that CompEng is family and that they are thankful to have been, and still be, a part of this family.

At the small “afterparty” in front of the lecture hall everyone was able to share their favorite CompEng moments with their past or present colleagues, friends, or lecturers over snacks and drinks. The biggest highlight of the “afterparty” was, without a doubt, the “CompEng 25” Photo wall!

Now that the official anniversary is over, we want to thank everyone again for joining us on this special day, and for shaping our beloved CompEng program into what it is today. We cannot wait to celebrate more anniversaries with you!
