Former CompEng student Diego Nicolás Petraroia was granted the Hans-Jürgen Niemann-Prize 2019 for his master’s thesis ‘Bi-material topology optimization considering reinforced concrete’s compressive-tensile anisotropy’.

Topology optimization is broadly speaking about the computer-aided placement of material in a given space to maximize the stiffness of a structure under a given volume restriction. Mr. Petraroia used existing approaches and extended them for use on reinforced concrete.

Professor Niemann is regarded as one of the pioneers in the field of building aerodynamics. He moved to the Ruhr University in 1968 to set up the "Model Experiments" department and from 1981 he was professor at the former Faculty of Civil Engineering.

We congratulate Mr. Petraroia and wish him all the best for his future career!
